Research, compare, share — and improve guidance

Our work follows a clear path: we listen to students, identify patterns, share what we learn, and turn the evidence into practical direction.

AREA 01

Conduct research

We work with partner schools to study how students approach university decisions, what influences them, and where they feel they need greater support.

  • Anonymous student surveys
  • Confidence, pressure and influence mapping
  • Ethical, consent-based participation

AREA 02

Publish the findings

We transform research into clear, accessible findings for the people who can use them: students, families, schools, researchers, and educators.

  • Open-access research reports
  • Plain-language visual summaries
  • Anonymised school feedback

AREA 03

Compare educational experiences

We examine patterns across schools and countries to understand which challenges are shared and which are shaped by local educational and cultural contexts.

  • Cross-country comparisons
  • Shared challenges and differences
  • International context for schools

AREA 04

Turn evidence into action

We use the findings to develop practical resources and recommendations that can support stronger university and career guidance.

  • Student decision frameworks
  • Guidance priorities for schools
  • Evidence-based recommendations
Methodology

How GYDL works inside a school

01

Preparation

We work with the school to understand its context, select the participating cohort, and establish consent and privacy procedures.

02

Student participation

Students complete an anonymous survey exploring their confidence, influences, pressures, priorities, and experiences with guidance.

03

Analysis and comparison

We study the responses at cohort level and, where appropriate, compare them with findings from other schools and countries.

04

Reporting and application

The school receives an anonymised report, while aggregated findings contribute to GYDL’s international research and future resources.

What your school receives

  • A clear, ready-to-run research process
  • An anonymised cohort report
  • Early access to international findings
  • Recognition as a GYDL partner school
Students first

Not participating through a school?

Students may join an approved GYDL research round directly, share their experiences, and contribute to a wider understanding of university decision-making.

Participation is voluntary, anonymous, and never an assessment of academic ability.
